Air Cargo Chennai airport earmarks Rs 50 cr for cargo handling T.E. Raja Simhan
Chennai April 29 The Chennai airport has earmarked around Rs 50 crore on creating cargo handling infrastructure, according to Mr Dinesh Kumar, Chennai Airport Director. As an interim measure, three sheds (5,500 sq m) had been constructed and work on the fourth (2,500 sq m) was going on. The airport is also taking up the construction of reinforced concrete structure for cargo handling, he told Business Line. The Chennai airport in 2006-07 handled 1.95 lakh tonnes (lt) of international cargo compared with 1.67 lt in the previous year, an increase of 17 per cent. Some of the international cargoes include garments, leather, pharmacy, chemical and engineering goods, he said. The domestic cargo handling during 2006-07 increased by 14 per cent to 43,130 tonnes (38,000 tonnes), he said.
