Plans to visit 350 campuses in the current fiscal
Focus on hiring from tier-III cities to capitalise on the talent available
Proposes to train and hire about 3,000 B.Sc graduates

Mumbai April 17 Tata Consultancy Services has said it will hire more than 32,000 people for the current fiscal.

"We are yet to decide on the exact number as we have just entered the first quarter, but they will be more than our previous fiscal's hirings (over 32,000) for sure," Mr S. Padmanabhan, Head, Human Resources, said.

The company added 5,827 employees during the fourth quarter of 2007, taking its staff count to 89,419.

Wage inflation

TCS also expects its wage bill to go up by 12-15 per cent in 2007-08 for its India operations; and by 3-5 per cent for its overseas operations. Wage inflation has had a 2.35 per cent impact on the company's operating margins for the fiscal year 2006-07, Mr S. Mahalingam, Chief Financial Officer, said. The impact is expected to be roughly the same this fiscal. The company's wage inflation was 14 per cent.

TCS plans to visit 350 campuses in the current fiscal. "Last year about 18 per cent of the company's hiring happened at the institutional level. We are increasing our focus on hiring from tier-III cities to capitalise on the talent available," Mr Padmanabhan added.

The company visited 251 technical campuses and made 12,143 offers in the fiscal ending 2007. Of these offers, 30 per cent were to candidates from tier-I cities, 60 per cent from tier-II cities and the rest from tier-III cities.

It plans to have 450 accredited campuses by the end of the financial year 2008.

TCS, which employs people from 67 different nationalities, plans to double its overseas campus recruitment by the end of the current fiscal. "We will be adding about 400 employees from campuses in Singapore, China, Brazil, Uruguay and Ireland. Moreover, we want to invest in relationships with more than 15 premier institutions globally by the end of the fiscal," said Mr Padmanabhan.

Last year, TCS hired about 200 employees from 15 institutions globally.

To expand the domestic IT pool, the company is banking on its trademark Ignite programme which is a seven-month learning programme that prepares B.Sc science graduates for a career at TCS.

"The company plans to train and hire about 3,000 B.Sc graduates in the current fiscal," Mr Padmanabhan added.
