The US Citizenship and Immigration Services on Wednesday said that it had reached the limit for H-1B visa petitions for 2008 in a single day and that it would not accept any more applications.
The agency, which had begun accepting petitions for H-1B visas on Monday, said it had received around 1,50,000 applications by mid-afternoon.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the American Embassy in India, Mr David Kennedy, said: "We really would not be able to say what triggered this. However, the US Congress is working on the issue to see what can be done about it."
The US Congress has mandated that the immigration agency limit the visas granted to 65,000.
The cap, however, will not apply to petitions made on behalf of current H-1B holders, while an additional 20,000 visas can be granted to applicants who hold advanced degrees from US academic institutions.
The agency said that it would use computers to randomly pick visa recipients from the applications received on Monday and Tuesday.
It would, however, reject the rest of the applications and return the filing fees.
Earlier, Nasscom had welcomed the US President, Mr George Bush's proposal to extend the number of H-1B visas for Indian professionals to work in the US.
