To help develop domestic market, create infrastructure facilities

Chennai March 26 The Centre has asked the aquaculture industry and the Andhra Pradesh Government to suggest policy measures needed for the promotion of the industry, according to Mr V. Vasant Kumar, a member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature.

Addressing the newly formed Prawn Farmers Federation of India, here on Sunday, he said the Andhra Pradesh Government would soon submit its recommendations to the National Development Council. The shrimp farmers' representatives should also provide their inputs to the effort. The objective is development of a domestic market and creation of required infrastructure facilities, including a cold chain.

Development of an effective domestic market could alone provide required protection from the ups and downs in international markets, he said.

The Union Agriculture Ministry has also committed to support the development of the domestic market, according to Mr Vasant Kumar.

The Prawn Farmers Federation includes aquaculture industry representatives from the coastal States and Union Territories.

Dr Y.S. Yadava, Member Secretary, Coastal Aquaculture Authority, the regulatory authority set up by the Centre to monitor aquaculture, said that shrimp farmers should adhere to the guidelines laid down for sustainable shrimp farming.

Official statistics indicate that of the 104 million tonnes (mt) of fish for human consumption worldwide, about 56 mt is caught from the sea and 48 mt is cultured either in coastal or inland farms.

Mr I.P.R. Mohan Raju, President, Prawn Farmers Federation, said the primary reason for the output stagnating at one-lakh tonnes, over the last few years was the poor quality of shrimp seeds from hatcheries. The Government must expedite the programmes aimed at making available quality broodstock.
