Bata India suspends 180 staff

Mumbai, Feb. 23

Bata India Ltd has fired 23 shop managers and suspended 180 employees in Mumbai because they refused to extend their working hours and keep shops open seven days a week, the company said in a statement on Friday.

The company held a number of meetings with the concerned employees to convince them to adopt the new schedule. Workers were assured that they would get one day a week off and no one would be made to work for more than 48 hours a week. The company argued that keeping the shops open longer would boost the company's sales, while allowing employees to earn higher salaries.

However, the employees had a different view of the situation and fell in line "with the instruction given by the central union from Kolkata of not co-operating with the management," the statement said.
