Automobiles Marketing - Performance Web Extras - Cars Car sales up 24%, bikes 12% in Jan Our Bureau
According to figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), domestic car sales in January stood at 1,04,488 units against 84,235 units in the corresponding period a year ago. The surge in sales was led by market leaders Maruti Udyog, Hyundai Motors India and Tata Motors, which together accounted for 89,497 units. Maruti posted monthly sales of 54,372 units during the month against 42,828 units in the corresponding period last year, up 27 per cent. Tata Motors had sales of 17,673 units (16,505 last January). In the motorcycle segment, domestic sales during the month stood at 5,60,056 units against 4,99,333 units in the corresponding period a year ago, up by 12.16 per cent. Hero Honda Motors continued its hold over the market with sales of 2,86,963 units against 2,38,455 units in the corresponding period last year, up 20.34 per cent. Its rival Bajaj Auto registered sales of 1,72,217 units (1,61,513 units). Domestic commercial vehicles sales during the month also grew by 38.87 per cent at 47,276 units against 34,043 units in the corresponding period a year ago.
Heavy vehicles segment
In the Heavy and Medium Commercial Vehicles segment (M&HCV), Tata Motors continued its lead in the goods carrier segment, but it was pipped to the top slot by Ashok Leyland in the passenger carrier category.
In the light commercial vehicles (LCV) category, Tata Motors continued its runaway success with mini-truck Ace clocking overall sales of 10,932 units in the goods carrier segment against 7,254 units in the corresponding period last year.
