Hyderabad Feb. 4 The Acharya N.G. Ranga Agriculture University (ANGRAU) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tuskagee University, Alabama, for a project on `Capacity Building for Risk Analysis to Promote Trade'.

The project under the US-India Agricultural Knowledge Initiative (AKI) programme will identify possible collaborative projects in research and education to spot the potential threats in trade, especially of vegetables, fruits, groundnuts and sea foods.

The MoU was signed by Dr T. Habtermarian, Dean, College of Medicine of Tuskagee University, a five-member team from the US Department of Agriculture and other university scientists working on risk analysis and Dr S. Raghuvardhan Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of ANGRAU.

Dr Gopal Reddy of Tuskagee University was instrumental in proposing the MoU, according to an ANGRAU press release.

EXPORT POTENTIAL

India is exporting more than Rs 50,000 crore worth of agricultural and veterinary commodities. Many hazardous chemicals and microbial contaminates pose a threat to exports, especially after the WTO provisions came into force. The MoU will help in training scientists in the area of risk analysis.

Dr Reddy said the University was in the process of identifying pest-free areas and also setting up food safety laboratories. The US team visited various departments and labs on the campus, a press release said.
