Shipping Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Sesa Goa begins iron ore export through New Mangalore port Our Bureau

The company, which is exporting 49,064 tonnes of iron ore fines in m.v. Aegean Falcon, has started loading the cargo at the port. This is the maiden export of Sesa Goa through New Mangalore Port. In a press release, Mr S. Gopalakrishna, Traffic Manager, New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), said that the consignment was brought from mines in Chitradurga by train for export to China. In the first 10 months, the port handled 24.84 lakh tonnes of cargo through the Railway compared with the total annual Railway traffic of 15 lakh tonnes during 2005-06.

Recently, the port commissioned seven high-mast lights at the marshalling yard at a cost of Rs 57 lakh. While inaugurating these lights at the marshalling yard, Mr P. Tamilvanan, NMPT Chairman, said that this facility would help in the smooth movement of the Railway traffic during night. This will help reduce the turnaround time of rakes. The port has recorded a 99 per cent growth in handling coal till January-end. The port handled 7.70 lakh tonnes of coal in the first 10 months of the fiscal. It handled 8.48 lakh tonnes of fertilisers (registering a growth of 57 per cent), and 14,804 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers (74 per cent growth) during period. The release said that granulated blast furnace slag — a new cargo from Kudremukh Iron and Steel Company (a sister concern of Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd) — has started moving through the port. The first consignment of 26,500 tonnes is likely to be exported to Dubai in the first week of February. The 10th cruise vessel of the season, m.v. Lelevant, called at the port on Thursday. More cruise vessels are expected to call at the port in the coming days, the release added.
