`651 cases of excise evasion in Apr-Dec'

The Directorate-General of Central Excise and Intelligence (DGCEI) has detected 651 cases of excise duty and service tax evasion involving an amount of Rs 1,344 crore during April-December 2006.

Of the amount of Rs 1,344 crore, the Revenue Department has already received voluntary deposit of Rs 318 crore from those involved in these cases. The DGCEI, which handles violations of Central excise laws, had detected 622 cases involving an amount of Rs 845.56 crore in the same period during the previous year, the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) spokesperson, Ms Hemambika Priya, told reporters here on Friday. The CBEC spokesperson also said that the field formations have during April-December 2006 detected 4,317 cases of duty evasion involving an amount of Rs 1,812 crore. Of this amount, the voluntary deposits have been to the tune of Rs 298 crore. In the first nine months of fiscal 2005-06, the field formations of CBEC had detected 3,984 cases of duty evasion involving an amount of Rs 1,640 crore.
