Chennai Feb. 2 Amara Raja Batteries Ltd has announced its foray into 2-wheeler batteries.

The company plans to set up a plant at an investment of Rs 113 crore to produce 2-wheeler batteries as well as small-sized VRLA (valve-regulated lead acid) batteries, mainly for UPS applications.

It produces batteries for both industrial applications and passenger cars, the latter under the `Amaron' brand.

For quite some time now, the company had been saying that it would enter the 2-wheeler battery market "at the right time".

The Managing Director, Mr Jay Galla, told Business Line on Wednesday that the company's passenger car batteries business had stabilised and hence it was prepared to diversify its product range.

A new line would be put up at its existing unit near Tirupathi.

The project would take three years to complete. While the product would be launched in the second quarter of next financial year, the new unit would produce to its full capacity of 5.4 million units only after three years.

Mr Galla noted that Amara Raja Batteries had a retail network of over 12,000 outlets — "the largest for any battery manufacturer in the country".
