Pune Jan. 29 Industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation has begun the construction of a medium and heavy-duty truck transmission and component plant in Ranjangaon.

Mr Alexander M. Cutler, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Eaton, told presspersons that the facility would be spread over 60,000 sq ft of production space and is scheduled to be completed by the year-end. The new plant would house machining, heat-treating and assembly operations of gearboxes and would have about 120 people on its rolls.

Mr Alexander said the first shipment of gearboxes from the facility would happen during the first quarter of 2008. In the initial phase, the production would cater to the export markets of the US, Europe and Brazil. He did not want to comment on the production capacity or the investment that is being pumped into the plant. Depending on the requirements, the plant would start catering to the domestic market, he said.

The Ranjangaon plant would be Eaton's second manufacturing facility in the country. The company is into four divisions, electrical, fluid power, truck and automotive. The truck segment contributes to $2.5-billion to the group's total turnover of $12.4 billion. Mr Alexander said the other plans include expansion of the company's existing hydraulics manufacturing facility in Pune to become a leader in the Asia Pacific region and growth in its electrical operations in Delhi.

Plans are on to increase manpower and add 40,000 sq ft of manufacturing space by 2010. The hydraulics facility is Eaton's Centre of Excellence for gear pumps and is being expanded to commence manufacturing of steering control units and hitch valves.

Service centre

Mr Alexander said the company is also setting up its new professional services centre at Kharadi in Pune. The new centre would include engineering support, research, product development, financial shared services and other information technology enabled services.

Mr Alexander said Eaton aims to become a $2.5-billion business in the Asia Pacific region in 2010 and pointed out that the key part of the growth would be from India.

By 2010, the company aims to achieve a 15 per cent growth from income, 15 per cent from return on investor capital and 10 per cent from sales.
