New Delhi Jan. 25 Russia has agreed to build additional nuclear power units at Koodankulam atomic station and the construction of more `Russian design' nuclear power plants at yet-to-be-identified new sites, among agreements reached on the first day of the President, Mr Vladimir Putin's visit here.

Details regarding the proposed four new nuclear units for the Koodankulam nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu are awaited, where two 1,000 MW units are already being set up under assistance from Moscow.

Joint Statement

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, told a joint press conference with Mr Putin that the two sides have signed a joint statement on co-operation in the field of atomic energy. "We appreciate Russia's support in lifting international restrictions on nuclear co-operation and assisting India in expansion of our nuclear energy programme," he said.

"India and Russia express their willingness to further expand and strengthen their bilateral civilian nuclear energy co-operation by broad-basing co-operation covering both power (fission and fusion energy) and non-power application in areas of mutual interest to be identified by both sides," the joint statement said. Russia also assured to work with other countries of Nuclear Suppliers Group to "create conditions through amendments to its guidelines to facilitate expansion of civilian nuclear energy co-operation with India."

Eight accords

Besides the civil nuclear co-operation, eight accords were signed by the two sides, including one on sharing of data from Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System and another to jointly launch a satellite. The two sides also supported early finalisation of a result-oriented programme of action by the Joint Study Group set up to increase bilateral trade to $10 billion by 2010. The issue of Indian participation in oil exploration and production with Russian companies in India, Russia and third countries was also discussed during delegation-level talks.
