Hyderabad Jan. 21 The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Saturday launched a multi-lingual SMS facility developed by Geneva Software Technologies to be offered in partnership with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.

This facility will now be offered to BSNL's GSM customers and is compatible with most handsets. Dr Reddy said it would empower farmers, traders and just about anyone, especially in the rural areas to communicate.

The Managing Director of Geneva, Mr T. Muralikrishna Reddy, said they were now equipped to handle SMS in about 100 Indian languages, including the 23 official languages.

The launch follows the recent rollout in Karnataka for Kannada users. The Principal General Manager, BSNL, Mr P.S.R. Krishna, said that the multi-lingual intra-circle SMS would be charged at Re. 1 initially. Based on the response, they would make it cheaper, he added.
