Infrastructure States - Andhra Pradesh AP to expedite airport projects in Tier II cities Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Jan. 17 The Andhra Pradesh Government will make efforts to expedite some of the airport projects in Tier II locations of the State. The Airport Authority of India and the State Government are set to sign up early next month for the development of airports at Kadappa and Warangal. It is proposed to upgrade these two airports and alongside, techno-economic feasibility study will be conducted for greenfield airports at Nellore, Ongole, Ramagundem and Tadipalligudem. This move follows a review meeting the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, held here on Wednesday. As per the proposals, construction and renovation of the Kadappa and Warangal airports will be completed at the earliest and commercial flights are expected to commence by December 2007. According to the statement, Kingfisher Airlines will start commercial operations to Puttaparthi from January 22.
AIRPORT EXPANSIONS
Meanwhile, it is proposed to expand the existing airports at Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, Rajahmundry, Tirupathi and Puttaparthi. Providing update on the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, civil works are poised to be completed by September 2007. About 60 per cent of the civil works relating to the airport have been completed along with passenger terminal buildings. The airside and landside works are at advanced stage. At the Vizag airport steps have been initiated for night landing facility which would be completed by January end. According to the statement, Union Government approval has been accorded for upgradation of Gannavaram and Rajahmundry airports. Following a meeting here on Wednesday, the Chief Minister has directed the Transport, Roads and Buildings department to prepare a road map for completion of these airports and provide for necessary support infrastructure.
