Kolkata , Jan. 17

The Motijug Group of Kolkata is setting up a 50:50 joint venture with Gorica Auto Industry of Slovania for setting up a facility for manufacturing rear body of trucks, dumpers and trailers at Kalyani at an investment of Rs 100 crore.

Stating this here today, Mr Anirudh Kanoi, Director in Ural India Ltd, a Motijug Group company, said manufacturing at the proposed facility would commence by the second quarter of the current calendar year. To begin with, the plant would be equipped to manufacture 10,000 units of rear bodies per annum. The company has set up a heavy-duty vehicle manufacturing facility at Haldia in joint venture with Uralaz of Russia.

Mr Kanoi told newspersons that Ural India expected to sell 3,000 heavy-duty vehicles in 2007-08. Of this, 1,500 vehicles would be sold to the mining sector while the remaining would be exported or may find applications in the Indian Army, road construction, etc. The company has received export enquiries from Bangladesh and Nepal.

Ural India Ltd was set up as a joint venture last year with the Kolkata-based Motijug Group, the West Bengal Government and Uralaz of Russia as partners. The company has started assembling heavy-duty and high-capacity trucks, dump trucks and tippers at its manufacturing facility at Haldia entailing an investment of Rs 550 crore over a five-year period. The first batch of five trucks rolled out of the factory site on Tuesday.

Initially, trucks made by Ural India are imported from Russia in completely knocked down versions. A one hundred per cent indigenisation is expected to be achieved when the plant operates at full capacity by 2009.

At full capacity, the plant would be equipped to manufacture 40,000 units of heavy-duty trucks, dump trucks and tippers that would find applications in the Army as well as sectors such as infrastructure, mining and road construction.
