Trinamool says CM's letter `meaningless and without substance'

FAST MEET: The West Bengal Governor, Mr Gopal Krishna Gandhi, with the Trinamool Congress leader, Ms Mamata Bannerjee, whose fast entered the 18th day, in Kolkata on Thursday. — A. Roy Chowdhury

Kolkata , Dec. 21

The West Bengal Government has once again urged Trinamool Congress leader, Ms Mamata Banerjee, to call off her agitation and discuss the Singur land acquisition issue across the table.

Following a request made by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, on Wednesday, the Governor of West Bengal, Mr Gopalkrishna Gandhi, on Thursday visited Ms Banerjee at the site of her hunger strike and asked her to call off her hunger strike and agitation to protest against the acquisition of farmland in Singur for the Tata small car project. This was the Governor's second visit to the site, where Ms Banerjee has been on a hunger strike for the last 18 days.

Around 4 p.m. in the afternoon on Thursday, the Chief Minister sent another letter to Ms Banerjee requesting her to call off her agitation and discuss the Singur issue with him and the State Government. He had sent Ms Banerjee a letter in this regard on Thursday as well.

Speaking to newspersons later, Mr Saugata Roy, a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress, said the Chief Minister's letter was "meaningless and without substance."

Protest march

Meanwhile, hundreds of bare-bodied Trinamool supporters marched through the streets of Kolkata to protest against the "forcible acquisition" of farmland in Singur for the Tata project. Traffic across the city was severely disrupted as a result. The Trinamool Congress has warned of a road and rail blockade in Kolkata between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday.
