Sutherland Global plans to add 7,000 globally

T.E. Raja Simhan

Half the new hiring will be in India

Chennai , Dec. 19

Sutherland Global Services, a New York-based business process outsourcing company with offshore operations in India, plans to add around 7,000 employees globally next year to take its employee base to about 22,000. "This is only a conservative estimate and half of the employee addition would happen in India," said Mr Dilip Vellodi, Chairman and CEO, Sutherland.

It ramped up its global headcount to over 15,000 employees and this year global revenue should be around $300 million (Rs 1,350 crore), he told Business Line from Manila, the Philippines. Sutherland, early this year, roped in Standard Chartered as its second investor. In 2004, Oak Investment Partners invested $30 million in the company. "The total investment of both investors should be $60-$65 million," he said.

India Expansion

Sutherland expanded its Kochi facility by adding around 600 people within the first five months of it becoming operational. In India, it has over 8,000 employees, representing over 50 per cent of Sutherland's headcount. The company has six facilities in Chennai and one in Mumbai.

Sutherland has 18 global delivery centres located in India, the US, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines. It manages a global client base of over 65 clients — over 70 per cent are listed among Fortune 500. Its service portfolio includes process consulting, back office processing, technology support, customer care and account management services that address the entire customer management lifecycle.

Philippines Expansion

Sutherland expanded its presence to a second city in the Philippines with the setting up of operations in Clark. The company already has two facilities in Manila. Ms Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, President of the Philippines, inaugurated the new facility that is fully operational with over 1,000 people, said Mr Vellodi.

This expansion takes the Sutherland employee headcount in the Philippines to over 2,000 people, surpassing the target of 1,500 people that the company announced earlier this year. It added nine marquee customers in sectors such as finance and e-commerce for its Philippines operations, he said. The company plans to hire another 1,000 professionals to take its total headcount in the Philippines to over 3,000 in the next 12 months. The Philippines centres offer redundancy to India operations, he said.
