Iron ore exports: Panel submits report

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Dec. 8

A Committee of Secretaries (CoS) formed for considering the matter of restricting iron ore exports, has submitted its report to the Government.

According to official sources, the report dealt with several issues related to sintering and mining development but has not made any specific recommendation regarding continuation or non-continuation of exports that had been the bone of contention between the steel manufacturers and iron ore mining companies leading to the Prime Minister setting up the high level committee.

The Ministry of Steel has expressed its views of restricting exports with a view to conserving resources to build up the domestic steel industry. Views of the Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of Commerce have also been incorporated into the report.

Earlier in August, the Steel Ministry had recommended restrictions on iron ore to the Commerce Ministry, the Minister of State for Steel, Mr Akhilesh Das, informed Parliament on Friday.
