Tata car project: Trade bodies in dark over ancillary units

Our Bureau

In the absence of proper initiatives, the development of auto ancillaries in the State may remain a dream.

Kolkata , Dec. 5

There is some uncertainty about the development of auto ancillary units in and around Singur where the Tata small car plant is projected to come up.

Inquiries reveal that the local chambers of commerce and small industries associations are in the dark about how the West Bengal Government proposes to proceed in this matter.

The present situation, they recall, is in sharp contrast to the debate and discussion held over the prospects of downstream industrial units in the State long before the Haldia Petrochemicals Complex became a reality.

The anxiety of the chambers of commerce and small industries associations is understandable. In the absence of proper initiatives by the local authorities, the development of auto ancillaries in the State may remain a dream, which may lead the Singur plant authorities to source the components from outside the State.

If that happens, sources say, the basic purpose of launching the Singur car project, namely creating jobs for local people through ancillary development, will be defeated.

According to indications available, cars will roll out of the Singur factory by 2008. This means that work on the development of ancillaries should begin now.

Referring to the Adityapur complex, which was developed around the Tata Steel factory in Jamshedpur, some of the local chambers of commerce and small industries associations felt that work on setting up something on a similar line would be done at Singur. The creation of an auto ancillary park, too, could be contemplated. The green signal in this direction is being awaited from the State Government.
