New Delhi , Nov. 24

To tackle the manpower crunch in the IT industry, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced that it would start a seven-month training programme for science graduates.

At present, the company employs only engineering graduates. However, it is now seeking to transform these graduates into a pool of suitable professionals for the IT industry.

Around 500 science graduates are now being trained under the pilot programme at its Chennai facility. However, depending on the success of the programme, TCS plans to scale up and make offers to 2,000 science graduates during the next fiscal.

TCS has also accredited 350 colleges across the country. Further, as a part of its programme to make the curriculum more relevant at the college level, TCS allows visiting faculty to its campus and also sends its employees to several engineering colleges.

"We are looking at B.Sc, M.Sc graduates with mathematics, physics background who could be trained to develop skills that would match the requirement of the industry. If it happens it would be beneficial to the industry," said Mr S. Ramadorai, CEO and Managing Director, TCS.

Dismissing any concerns over attrition rates caused by fresh graduates in the industry, he added TCS provided opportunity to engineers as well as employees with Masters degree to pursue further studies.
