Coimbatore , Nov. 24 Mobile phone service provider Bharti Airtel Ltd, which has just launched the instant music on mobile telephones styled `SongCatcher', `is virtually like No 2 in the world' on the number of downloads, according to Mr P. Swaminathan, CEO, Bharti Airtel, Mobility, Chennai and Tamil Nadu. He told presspersons here that he would not like to specify the growth of revenue from music downloads but that earnings from value-added services constituted about 14-15 per cent. He said even now Airtel provided `Hello Tune' facility for which it levied a download charge of Rs 15 and monthly charge of Rs 30 and there was no change in that. The latest facility would make the work of music download a hassle free job. Asked about the revenue sharing agreement between Airtel and the copyright holders of the songs, he said he did not have the details readily. But it was done absolutely legally and payments would be made on certain basis.
Music library
His company had built a library of more than 20,000 songs in 20 languages to choose from of which Tamil songs numbered about 1,500 and Hindi around 2,300. He expected the number of people who use hello tunes to double in one year in percentage terms. He said the way the mobile phones could be used and the things that could be loaded onto the mobile phones were `continuously evolving' and they come equipped with even music systems. He visualised a time, once there are changes in the banking laws etc., when the mobile phones could be used even as credit cards. Mr Swaminathan said the music library had even some carnatic music though it needs to build on that.
