"Production machinery and equipment has grown by 14.8 per cent, metal and alloy industries by 19.2 per cent, chemical at 10.8 per cent, textiles at 15.4 per cent. All these are indicators that the growth that is taking place is in our manufacturing sector, is the employment generating sector", Mr Kamal Nath, Union Commerce and Industry Minister said here on Monday .

The weightage of manufacturing in the index of industrial production (IIP) is about 80 per cent.

Mr Kamal Nath also highlighted that the national manufacturing initiative proposed by the national manufacturing competitiveness council has envisaged stepping up of the manufacturing sector growth from 9 to 10 per cent to 12 to 14 per cent in the 11th Plan Period. "However, we have already achieved the 12 per cent growth for manufacturing sector in the last years of the 10th Plan itself", Mr Kamal Nath said.
