Jet gets nod to operate US flights

New Delhi , Nov 16

After a wait of almost 20 months, Jet Airways has received clearance to launch flights to the US.

The airline has been given "economic authority" by the US Department of Transport to operate regular flights to the US.

Jet Airways will now have to follow regular procedures for operating flights to the US, such as completing operational discussions with the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), said a spokesperson of the US Embassy.

The operational discussion with the FAA would include review of various procedures, including looking at the pilots employed with the airline before approval is granted.

The decision to give "economic authority" to Jet Airways was a suo motu decision, sources indicated.

"With Jet getting the economic authority of operating flights to the US, the main hurdle to starting operations has been crossed. The other formalities that need to be fulfilled should not be that difficult."

The airline, which was designated by India to operate flights to the US in February 2005, could not start the flights as questions were raised about its funding.

The sources said that the Indian side had time and again raised the issue that the US needed to observe international protocols and allow Jet to start regular services to the US.

"The fact that India follows strict procedures before granting a licence to start an airline and the fact that Jet Airways was a carrier designated by the Indian Government to fly abroad was explained to the US authorities. Besides, the need for following international protocols was also emphasised," sources said, on what prompted the US decision.
