Employment Government - Politics Industry & Economy - Social Welfare Industry against job quota, reservations in private sector Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 15 The Indian industry on Wednesday made it clear to the Government its opposition to any type of quota and reservations for scheduled cast and scheduled tribe (SC/ST) candidates for jobs in the private sector and as an alternative, presented an agenda for affirmative action that it would voluntarily undertake. Industry representatives met the Secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Dr Ajay Dua, and presented its views. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Mr J.J. Irani, former CII President and Tata Steel Managing Director, said: "We are all on the same side - the Government, industry and the target population group and we have assured that the chambers and industry will voluntarily take steps towards the improvement of the SC/STs." "We have made it clear that we are against quotas. We are against reservation. Any move to impose this through legislation will be unfortunate," he said. On what the industry stand would be if Government moves ahead with its reservation plans, Dr Irani said "in that case the affirmative actions would have difficulty as our energies would get diverted from them and would be spent on countering them and complying with them." Dr Dua said "we have only received their views and would now convey it to the task force constituted at the Prime Minister's office." The meeting was called by the DIPP to ascertain the views of the industry and convey them to the Task Force on Affirmative Action headed by Principal Secretary at the PMO, Mr T.K.A. Nair. The affirmative actions proposed by the industry are essentially for education, skill formation, human capital development and promotion of industrialisation in districts having dominant SC/ST population. The suggestions include vocational trainings, adoption of villages, entrepreneur development and ensuring greater access to members of the SC/ST communities.
