New Business GE Water to set up desalination plant for Tata Chem unit Our Bureau
Bangalore , Nov. 9 GE Water & Process Technologies, a unit of GE Infrastructure, has bagged the contract for setting up a water desalination plant for Tata Chemicals in Metapur in Gujarat. The mobile seawater project, the first desalination plant in the country, will be set up on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis for a four-year period. The contract is worth $6.5 million. According to Mr H. Bala, Chief Executive Officer, the plant will supply 5.8 million litres per day of industrial water and reduce energy and overall costs, thus alleviating the water scarcity faced by Tata Chemicals. Mr R. Mukundan, COO, Chemicals Business, Tata Chemicals Ltd, said, "The environment has always been of special concern to Tata Chemicals. We are deeply committed to using innovative technologies to help improve the quality of life of the local community without adversely affecting the environment." GE Water & Process Technologies offers a variety of technologies for processing and recycling water, said Mr Bala. He said "we provide desalination solutions for both brackish water and seawater - solutions that range from standard equipment suitable for light commercial or large residential applications as well as mobile solutions for temporary requirements." One of the largest suppliers of desalination plants in the world, GE's installed desalination platforms reclaim more than two billion gallons of water a day for a variety of purposes. Faced with water stress by both industry and domestic consumers, the market for process technology and equipment was estimated to be $2 billion by next year, Mr Bala said. GE Water's business had grown by over 36 per cent in the last one year to $15 million in India. It is likely to reach $300 million by 2010.
