Tata Elxsi to add 2 more development centres

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore , Nov. 6

Tata Elxsi is looking to strengthen its presence in India by adding at least two development centers to its existing four within the next 18 months. Its development centre outside of India is expected to come up at Tokyo in Japan very soon.

Disclosing the developments to Business Line Mr Thangarajan, Head (Operations), Tata Elxsi India, said the Tokyo arm would be its first `near shore' centre outside the country. `We will be starting operations there very soon with about 30 people.'

On the domestic expansion plans, he said the company had narrowed down on two cities for establishing its next development centre. (It has set up its presence in Bangalore, Chennai, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram).

`Coimbatore is a fore-runner at this juncture considering the calibre of education and connectivity. We are yet to close in on either of the two places,' he said but refused to name the other city.

The announcement is expected to be made by March 2007.

Headcount

Besides strengthening its reach and presence, the company is also looking to double its headcount within the next 12 months. There are about 2,000 people on its rolls at present. `We will absorb candidates who have the ability to learn rather than for mere knowledge, both off campus and lateral. But the prospective candidate should be strong in the fundamentals,' he said and pointed out that the challenge was in identifying and retaining the right talent.

While not committing on the proposed investment, Mr Thangarajan said the growth so far had been customer-driven and product based. `We are now in a position to invest. We are in the process of changing our strategy to an investment-heavy product-design company rather than remaining a customer-driven smaller player. We have invested heavily in chip design and VLSI design among others,' he added.

The company is working on 13 internally structured domains.

The management, he said was proposing a high share of investment on its development centre at Thiruvananthapuram.
