Rs 35 lakh released for fisherwomen scheme

Plans ahead State Cabinet has approved to release Rs 4 crore for ailing KFDC's revival. Around 2,000 houses have been approved under the `matsyashraya' scheme.

Mangalore , Oct. 22

The Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) is planning to set up retail outlets in various parts of Bangalore.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr B. Nagaraj Shetty, Karnataka Minister for Fisheries and Endowment, said that he has discussed with the Commissioner of Bangalore City Corporation to provide some stalls for this purpose.

"We want to provide fresh fish, fish fry and fish curry to the people of Bangalore in such stalls," he said.

Terming it as one of the initiatives to revive the ailing KFDC, he said the State Cabinet has approved to release Rs 4 crore for its revival.

Referring to the `matsyashraya' scheme in which fishermen will be provided with housing facilities, Mr Shetty said the Government has decided to increase the amount for each dwelling unit from Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000. Around 2,000 houses have been approved for fishermen under the scheme.

Centre's approval

Proposal has been sent for the approval of another 2,500 houses. Since this scheme has contribution from the Centre, it needs the approval from it. "But approval for 5,000 houses will be given," he said.

The Government has already released Rs 35 lakh in `Matsya Mahila Swavalambi' scheme. Under this Rs 1-crore scheme, each fisherwoman will get Rs 5,000 for carrying out the business.

Though the order was issued for disbursing loans to fishermen at 4 per cent interest rates through cooperative societies, it could not be taken up due to some technical problems. All the problems have been rectified now. Of Rs 2.69 crore sanctioned for the purpose, Rs 1.70 crore has been released, he said.

TEMPLE RENOVATION

The Government has released Rs 3.45 crore for renovation and development of 946 temples in the State. An amount of Rs 1.5 crore has been earmarked for the development of temples in Kodagu district, he said.

An amount of Rs 3.5 crore has been released to MLAs under the `Aradhana' scheme of the Government, and order has been issued to release another Rs 7.5 crore. Each MLA can spend Rs 5 lakh under the scheme, he said.

Stating that disbursal of subsidy for Manasa Sarovar pilgrims is one of the important schemes of the Government, he said it had earmarked Rs 25 lakh for this purpose.

"We have records about 359 pilgrims from Karnataka visiting Manasa Sarovar. We are planning to disburse Rs 25,000 for each of them," he said. Around Rs 1 crore is needed for this purpose. The Government had earmarked Rs 25 lakh in the budget, and the Karnataka Finance Minister has agreed to release another Rs 75 lakh, he added.
