O&M plans hires from tier-II centres

Focus on tapping talent from smaller cities


The agency, which has not made any campus recruitments over the past few years, now plans to approach management schools.

Mumbai , Oct. 20

WPP group agency O&M plans recruitments from tier-II cities and will target business schools and smaller ad agencies in places such as Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Coimbatore and Kochi. Mr J.C. Giri, President, Ogilvy Advertising, told Business Line, "There is an abundance of talent in the smaller cities and people who have a level of passion and are aware and interested in this field. Since there is so much of diversity coming from the smaller cities, we would like to capitalise on it apart from getting people from the big cities. Today we are more conscious about tapping talent from such places."

After a long gap

The agency, which has not made any campus recruitments over the past few years, now plans to approach management schools. "We have not gone to campus for the past seven years. All this time we have been recruiting from small-time agencies," Mr Giri said.

Besides mid-level agencies, O&M has also recruited sporadically from lower-rung B-schools such as the Mudra Institute of Communications in Ahmedabad and Symbiosis in Pune.

"The quality of the work we do does attract talent. Besides, we have also been training people over the years in our agency," he added.

The agency launched `Ogilvy on Campus', a programme to connect with the best B-schools in the country, including the IIMs.

It plans to showcase case studies of the iconic brands it has built over the years, and share experiences and learning with the academic community. "Today we are open to having discussions with the IIMs. We intend going back to recruiting from campuses and are looking at not just advertising but the entire 360-degree initiatives taken by us in the other areas as well," Mr Giri said.

Last year, O&M had a showcase session with the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad. "It is not just about recruitment but we believe in celebrating ideas by going to such management schools. The purpose is to make the schools aware about the brands and getting away from the traditional way of doing business," he said.
