Reliance Energy Ltd (REL) has reported 16.8 per cent increase in net profit for the second quarter ended September 2006.

The company's net profit amounted to Rs 186.39 crore against Rs 159.57 crore in the corresponding previous period.

Total income rose by 36 per cent to Rs 1,583.70 crore (Rs 1,161.36 crore).

Of this, net sales from electricity amounted to Rs 904.92 crore, growing 12.26 per cent.

Income from EPC and contracts increased by 115 per cent to Rs 502.71 crore (Rs 233.40 crore).

Interest income was higher at Rs 152.25 crore (Rs 90.81 crore).

The company sold six per cent more in volume terms during the half-year ended September, with sales of electrical energy being 4,416 million units (4,164 million units).

During the half-year, consumer base in the Mumbai supply area increased by 0.5 lakh to 25.4 lakh consumers, a company release said.

The company purchased 2,318 million units of electrical energy from external sources during the half-year, which was 6.5 per cent higher than in the corresponding previous period.

The cost of energy purchased rose by 13 per cent to Rs 642 crore due to higher per unit cost.

The company's Dahanu Thermal Power Station operated at a plant load factor (PLF) of 99.2 per cent for the half-year, up from a PLF of 94.0 per cent earlier.

The Samalkot power station in Andhra Pradesh operated at a PLF of 48.9 per cent (51.2 per cent).

The lower PLF was mainly on account of lower availability of gas.

The Goa power station maintained a PLF of 88.9 per cent during the period under review, the company said.

REL shares closed at Rs 452.40 on the BSE on Thursday, losing 1.82 per cent over Wednesday's close.
