Motorcycle sales up 40 pc; upgrades of Pulsar in Q3

Bajaj Auto Ltd has posted a net profit of Rs 317.59 crore for the second quarter ended September 2006 compared with Rs 289.36 crore during the corresponding quarter last fiscal. Total income for the quarter has increased to Rs 2,578.40 crore from Rs 2,003.15 crore last year.

Motorcycles

According to an official communication, BAL has recorded about 40 per cent increase in motorcycle sales, against the industry growth of 18 per cent.

Bajaj Platina sold over one lakh units in September and continues to dominate the premium segment with a market share of 63 per cent. Upgrades of Pulsar would be launched in the third quarter of the current fiscal, it said.

It has recorded sales of 6,23,061 motorcycles in the second quarter (4,45,557 vehicles), recording a growth of 40 per cent.

For the first six months, the sales have touched 11,91,248 vehicles as against 8,68,100 vehicles in H1 2005-06, registering a growth of 37 per cent.

In the three-wheeler segment, cargo segment has recorded a growth of 50 per cent in the second quarter as against the industry growth of 30 per cent.

Sales of 80,683 vehicles in the second quarter of the current year (68,485vehicles) registered a growth of 18 per cent.

Total sales for the first six months of the current year stood at 1,51,558 vehicles (1,21,796 in first half 2005-06), — a growth of 24 per cent.

3-wheelers

It noted that BAL has also launched a CNG variant of GC 1000 and a new passenger vehicle, Mega. Additional upgrades of three-wheelers are expected to be launched during the coming quarters. Over 40 per cent of three wheelers are exported, it said.

Exports constitute 16 per cent of the total sales compared to three per cent five years ago.

Exports have grown by 81 per cent in the second quarter of the corresponding year and has recorded exports of 1,11,846 vehicles (61,913 vehicles). The total exports for the first half of the current fiscal is 2,10,109 (1,12,406), a growth of 87 per cent.
