`AAI capable of handling Chennai airport update'

Our Bureau

Chennai , Sept. 7

The AAI Employees Joint Forum (southern region) has listed out the various options available to it to modernise the Chennai airport and has asked the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, to impress upon the Prime Minister the viability of modernising the airport by the AAI itself.

The joint forum presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister on Wednesday when Mr M.K. Pandhe, President, CITU, and others called on him.

In the memorandum, the joint forum has said the Airports Authority of India is capable of handling the proposed modernisation. It also has the financial wherewithal and will be in a position to raise resources to complete the proposed modernisation within schedule. The AAI too should be allowed to commercially exploit the land near the airport, as has been allowed to the private sector in the case of other airports, to generate additional non-traffic revenue from the airport.
