Bangalore, Aug. 22

Qualcomm will be holding the Wireless Reach programme in alliance with the Nasscom Foundation. The firm expects the Indian developer community to harness its mobile application platform BREW to create applications that will empower communities in the areas of health, education, environment, public safety and governance.

The Wireless Reach initiative was created in 2005 to empower underserved communities through the use of third generation (3G) wireless technologies by collaborating with government institutions, universities and other agencies and organisations. This initiative has already created opportunities to empower communities in countries such as China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Peru, Mexico, Vietnam and Indonesia, according to the company.

At the recent BREW 2006 Conference, Dr Paul E. Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm, announced that the Company would fund $1 million for its Wireless Reach BREW Application Funding programme. As part of this programme, Qualcomm will award five grants totalling up to $500,000 globally for the most innovative proposals for BREW applications that provide services to underserved communities across the globe.
