EGoM on special economic zones to meet today

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi , Aug. 21

The Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) on special economic zones (SEZs), headed by the Defence Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, is to meet here on Tuesday to review the cap on the number of SEZs that could be established in the country.

Informed sources indicated that the need to review the cap might have arisen in the wake of the Board of Approvals (BoA) already granting in-principle approvals to 150 proposals.

In addition to these proposals, the BoA is understood to have received a number of new proposals. The Government had earlier decided to cap the number of approved SEZs at 150.

The BoA's further course of action on the proposals that are yet to be processed is likely to be dictated by the decisions of the EGoM.

Land acquisition

Meanwhile, a top Commerce Ministry official told Business Line that there would be no scope for misuse of the land acquired by the SEZ developers as clear guidelines have been prepared and that a detailed project report about land use had to be submitted for the approval.

"There is no question of siphoning of lands for speculative purposes," the official said.
