MTNL-Aksh Opticfibre in tie-up for IPTV

Watch TV on telephone lines soon

IPTV will enable users to get services such as video on demand, broadband and TV channels using MTNL's fixed line infrastructure.

New Delhi , Aug 16

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd has entered into an agreement with Aksh Opticfibre Ltd for offering Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services to its subscribers in Delhi and Mumbai.

IPTV will enable users to get services such as video on demand, broadband and TV channels using MTNL's fixed line infrastructure. The agreement can take the shape of a special purpose vehicle at a later date, according to MTNL sources.

Fixed line users

The move is aimed at making fixed line telephone more attractive to users, they said. The company has witnessed a steep reduction in fixed line usage over the past year.

They said that the deal is in the form of revenue sharing between the two sides where Aksh Opticfibre will keep 75 per cent of the revenue while the balance will go to MTNL.

Aksh will offer its set-top-box for the subscribers and also manage content for the service. Sources said that partnerships with content providers such as TV broadcasters are in the offing.

However, consumers will have to wait before they can get TV over phone lines. The Government and telecom regulator are in the process of formulating the policy for IPTV services.
