Mr Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Commerce, has suggested the appointment of ombudsmen to address grievances from job seekers in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).
Addressing a workshop on social audit of the scheme, he said their presence would make a difference. "You need to have a mechanism to take action immediately to send a message," he said.
Website launched
Earlier, he launched a Telugu Web site on the job scheme - www.nrega.ap.gov.in - that gave the entire information on the scheme, works on offer and number of job seekers who were benefited.
Stating that Andhra Pradesh was the first State in the country to offer complete information on the scheme, he said this would go a long way in ensuring transparency.
Funds granted
The Minister said he was aware of complaints of misuse of the scheme in several parts. In addition to the job scheme, the Union Cabinet had recently approved a Rs 3,500 crore scheme (Backward Regions Grants Fund) under which the State would get Rs 130 crore - Rs 10 crore each for NREGS districts.
Mr D. Srinivas, AP Minister for Rural Development, said though 40 lakh job cards were issued in the State only nine lakh sought jobs.
