New Projects States - West Bengal
Our Bureau
Kolkata, Aug. 8 The West Bengal Government expects to complete land acquisition for the proposed small car manufacturing facility of Tata Motors by October. Tata Motors had asked for close to 1,000 acres at Singur in Hoogly district for setting up the facility. The project had fuelled a controversy over alleged indiscriminate acquisition of fertile agricultural land for industrial use. Talking to Business Line, the State Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Nirupam Sen, said that the one-month public hearing period would be over on August 24. This will be followed by negotiations on land price. "A large section of farmers has already agreed to sell their land for the project," he said adding, "I do not foresee any delay in acquiring land for the project." Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Sons, who was in city today in connection with the AGM of Tata Tea lauded the support and co-operation extended by the State Government. "There are no controversies. Please do not create any controversy," he told presspersons when it was pointed out that land acquisition at Singur was facing opposition. He said the Tata Motors investment would create opportunities in the automobile component sector. "I believe a series of component manufacturers would set up facilities in the State," he said.
