Warns of show-cause notice to operators violating norms

Authenticity norms
The licensee company is required to submit information of bulk connection on a monthly basis to Senior DDG (Vigilance). It must device appropriate fraud management and prevention programme. It must also maintain a record of check for verification by licensor.

New Delhi , July 17

The Department of Telecom has come down heavily on mobile operators and has asked to adhere strictly to the subscriber verification norms. It issued directives on Monday to carry out special authenticity checks for bulk connections besides taking other measures to check the validity before giving a connection.

The DoT said that in case an operator was found to be providing telephone connections without proper verification of subscribers, the operators would be issued a show-cause on why appropriate action including imposition of penalty should not be taken.

"The licensee company is required to submit information of bulk connection on a monthly basis to Senior DDG (Vigilance), device appropriate fraud management and prevention programme, maintain a record of check for verification by licensor," the Department of Telecom said in a directive to the mobile operators.

The directive specifically mentions that multiple connections have been issued in single names by the franchisee of the company by using forged identity proof documents.

The DoT said that during a special drive conducted by the Government to ascertain the status of subscriber verification by service providers in compliance with the licence conditions, it has been noticed that the companies have failed to comply.

The DoT move comes in the wake of unearthing of large-scale fake connections recently. Security agencies have been asking the operators to comply with the norms for verification as the mobile was being used for carrying out illegal activities.
