Hyderabad , June 10 The Centre should frame guidelines governing technology agreements between companies for transgenic seeds, planting material and field crop with a view to protect the interest of farmers and local seed companies. This was one of the major areas of consensus reached by Agriculture Minister's of seven cotton-growing States, which met here on Friday. It was also part of a 7-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was firmed up today. The MoU decided to request the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) to identify transgenics as a priority research area and allocate more funds to State universities, so that transgenic seeds suitable to local conditions can be evolved. On other issues pertaining to Agriculture, the MoU has sought to request the Centre to pass the New Seeds Bill, 2004 in Parliament expeditiously; share common problems and good practises in the field of agriculture and devise strategies to solve problems.
