Human Resources States - Tamil Nadu Summer jobs: A lucrative option for students Archana Venkat
Chennai , June 5 Summer is synonymous with not just packing your bags for the nearest tourist spot. It is also the job season when youngsters don their caps and set out to make a fast buck or two. Promotion campaigns are the most popular options. Be it for marketing products or simply featuring in the campaign, it is students who put their noses to the grind. Mr Prem Antony, Manager, Business Development at Iventure Consulting, an events management and research firm, says the company has hired 45 students compared to the 20 last year. "Mostly, second and third-year students of arts and science colleges come to work with us for promotions," he says. "Girls are more active to get such jobs which involve interacting with people," says Mr Shine Kumar, Manager, Business Development and Events Planning, IMI Events. He says there are at least five girls who enrol every week for work that involves product explanation, promoting commercial events and campaigning for products like cell phones.
Segment-wise hiring
Banks too hire students to promote their loan products. These youngsters are paid between Rs 200 and Rs 500 a day for working on commercial events and one can earn Rs 3,000-4,000 a day for anchoring shows in English. Private caterers and outdoor catering divisions of hotels also hire students regularly. Mr A. Neelakantan, Manager Operations, Apollo Sindoori Group of Hotels, says, "For banquets involving over 500 people, we hire students mainly from catering colleges. For every 100 guests we hire a maximum of six students." The work involves waiting on tables, serving, taking charge of the seating arrangements and clearing used cutlery. Students are paid Rs 125 - Rs 150 per session. For the more ambitious ones modelling is a lucrative option. "I have at least 10-15 boys everyday looking for assignments," says Model Coordinator Ms Thaara Umesh. In a city famed for its silks and jewellery, there are not too many aspiring female models. "For every 4-5 male models, on many occasions I don't get even one female model," she says.
Modelling
Most models are Engineering and MBA students. They get to feature in print and television advertisements and also walk the ramp for local shows. Freshers can expect between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 per assignment. Though money is a big driver while scouting for summer jobs, some students also look at value additions to their career and work with corporates through summer training. Ajuba Solutions Private Ltd has trained 45 students this year, largely from arts and science colleges, compared to the 20 they took in last year. Hired for processes such as data entry, analysis and customer support functions, they get paid between Rs 4,000 and Rs 8,000 over the entire duration of work, says Mr P.K. Prasad, Manager-Finance and Company Secretary - Finance, Ajuba Solutions. This helps them get a hang of industry practices.
