Standards & Benchmarks States - Karnataka UL India initiative to set up fire advisory council Our Bureau,
Bangalore , May 11 UL India has initiated a move along with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to constitute the Indian Fire Advisory Council that would examine measures to make fire safety regulatory compliance measures more contemporary to go beyond the current obligation of only fire repression. The Council, with 12 to 15 members, will be constituted soon with representations from manufacturing, regulatory agencies and academia to study the nuances for more effective safety standards. UL India is an affiliate of Underwriters Laboratories Inc (UL), an independent not-for-profit product safety testing and certification agency. The Bangalore-based UL India is the regional hub for West Asia, SAARC and Asian countries. Mr Manish Bhatnagar, Director, Sales and Marketing, UL India Pvt Ltd, told Business Line that though various regulatory agencies including the National Building Code have stipulated certain mandatory measures for fire safety, the need to strengthen the detection and resistance aspects has assumed importance. New technologies and materials that prevent fire with their resistance capacity could be used to minimise the incidence of catastrophes. Mr Bhatnagar said with companies voluntarily going for safety and quality certification, UL India sees a big opportunity, with the country emerging both as a destination market and a outsourcing hub. UL could also act as a one-stop shop for companies seeking to understand national standards and provide testing and certification services.
