Telecommunications MTNL gets NLD licence Our Bureau
New Delhi , May 9 In a move that could spark off a new round of tariff cuts in the STD space beginning with the lucrative circles of Delhi and Mumbai, State-owned telecom corporation Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) today said it has got the National Long Distance (NLD) licence from the Government. "We have received a letter from Department of Telecommunications (DoT) saying that the approval has been granted to give us the NLD licence. We have delivered the payment of Rs 2.5 crore as entry fee and kept the documents ready. We will sign the licence tomorrow," Ms Anita Soni, Director (Finance), MTNL, said here. Ms Soni, however, did not comment on the fresh pricing strategy for STD services saying that the company was still working out the details. The newly procured NLD licence may give MTNL an edge as operating in the two cream metros will strengthen its bargaining position with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) for lower carriage charges (less than 65 paise) for rest of the country, which will also help MTNL reduce its STD rates for rest of the country.
May save Rs 400 cr
According to industry analysts, a NLD licence of its own may save the company up to Rs 400 crore when it begins carrying its own traffic. MTNL's comments come in the wake of media reports that BSNL has asked MTNL to cough up about Rs 900 crore as outstanding dues for 2005-06, on account of charges for carrying NLD traffic and access deficit charge, but Ms Soni declined to comment on the issue.
