Delhi, Mumbai airports: CPI(M) seeks clarification

Our Bureau

New Delhi , May 8

THE CPI(M) today asked the Government to keep in abeyance the handing over of Delhi and Mumbai airports to private parties till the issue of accountability of the executive is clarified by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on the floor of the House.

This comes in the light of the Supreme Court questioning the Government decision to reduce the technical eligibility criteria while deciding on the private sector joint venture partner to take up the modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports.

The court, while admitting the Special Leave Petition of Reliance Airport Developers Pvt Ltd, also questioned the technical expertise of the empowered Group of Ministers to arrive at a decision concerning technical bids for the two airports, the CPI(M) Member of Parliament, Ms Brinda Karat, has pointed out in a letter to the PM.

"It is quite unfortunate that accountability of executive to Parliament is being undermined to an extent that one has to wait for judicial intervention for acts of omission of commission by the executive," the letter adds.
