Retailer Tesco looks to double head count in India

Hyderabad , April 11

As Tesco, the third largest retail chain with revenues of £37 billion and 3,70,000 employees, goes global, its heart beats in India.

The India centre has emerged as a strategic component of the company and the Tesco arm is on a talent hunt. It is poised to double its headcount by the end of the year to over 2,000.

The UK-based retailer, next only to Walmart and Carrefour in size, is exploring new vistas and is foraying into the US, China, Japan and Turkey, the Indian arm of Tesco — Tesco Hindustan Service Centre — has emerged as its `hub of innovation'.

Given the task of providing key technology inputs, the India centre of Tesco based in Bangalore has developed `Tesco in a Box,' a custom-built application that integrates the entire retail operation.

The CEO of Tesco Hindustan Service Centre, Ms Meena Ganesh, said that the Bangalore centre has grown to about 1,200 people and is poised to almost double by the end of this year.

Speaking to newspersons, Ms Meena Ganesh said, "In a very short time, the range of work we do from India has gone up significantly.

"Right from customising the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system for operations in China, Japan, the US and Turkey, or for that matter managing the accounts, and developing, implementing and supporting a data warehousing tool called Teradata, all are handled here."

Evaluating opportunity

"Apart from these areas, new technological innovations in areas of integration of services and providing technology support functions for personal digital assistants and radio frequency identification (RFID) and development of online services, are now being handled," she said.

Tesco is evaluating opportunity to enter India as a retailer and no decision has been taken as yet.

However, the company expects to step up procurement from India which could potentially go up to about £100 million pounds in the areas of textiles and household items. Tirupur and Delhi are its procurement zones.
