Sensex strolls past 11,000 points

Mumbai , March 21

The overriding bullishness of the Indian stock market got another shot-in-the-arm with the Sensex touching the 11,000 mark today.

BSE's 30-stock benchmark index touched its highest ever of 11,017.25 today.

The Sensex made its journey from 10,000 to 11,000 in a matter of 42 days. However, institutional investors, especially foreign institutional investors, chose to book profits at the 11000-plus level and the index closed lower at 10905.20. Trading was volatile today with the index swinging by over 153 points between its highest and lowest levels.

The Nifty traced a similar pattern, closing at 3262.30, despite touching an intra-day high of 3292.15. With the Sensex breaching the 11000-level, it has moved closer to the Dow Jones The Dow is currently at 11274.53. "We expect the Sensex to over take the Dow shortly," said Mr. Roop Chand Betala, Betala Stock Broking.
