`Visit Malaysia' campaign

Hyderabad , March 3

Tourism Malaysia on Friday announced a Rs 12-crore campaign in India to celebrate its `Golden Anniversary' (50 years) of Independence and attract more than 3.5 lakh Indian tourists to `Truly Asia' by 2007.

The Malaysian Government's Organisation campaign is a marketing and promotion prelude to the actual Visit Malaysia Year 2007 (VMY 2007).

The aggressive effort by the Ministry of Tourism to market Malaysia as the preferred international tourist destination, also aims to increase foreign tourist arrivals to the country. The Ministry expects to attract more than 20 million global visitors through this campaign.

Inaugurating the campaign at a press conference, Mr Mirza Mohammad Taiyab Beg, Deputy Director General, Tourism Malaysia, said: "India is the first country where we are launching our global VMY 2007 campaign officially".

"The significance of this market is an accepted fact in our Ministry and we want to consolidate this further by not only targeting to increase in the number of tourist arrivals but also attract more `hi-end' tourists who will spend more and stay for a longer period," he said

Tourism Malaysia is spearheading a tourism sales mission to India from February 19 to March 5. The delegation comprising 37 companies is positioning Malaysia as a top-of-the-mind tourist destination in the region. During January 2005 up to October 2005, Malaysia attracted a total of 13,581,502 tourist arrivals compared to 13,071,098 for the same period in 2004, indicating an increase of 3.9 per cent.
