Automobiles Marketing - Trends Passenger car sales up 8.3 pc in Jan Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb 13 DOMESTIC passenger car sales rose 8.3 per cent in January to 84,235 units compared to 77,744 units in the same month last year. Sales were helped by increased vehicle sales by Tata Motors, Maruti, and Ford, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Meanwhile, motorcycle sales were up 14.6 per cent as all the major players - Hero Honda, Bajaj Auto, and TVS - saw increased demand for their products. According to SIAM, bike sales in January 2006 were 4,99,333 units compared to 4,35,665 units in the same month last year. Overall two-wheeler sales, comprising bikes, scooters, and mopeds, were up 12.8 per cent in the first 10 months at 58,08,258 units (51,49,313 units). Commercial vehicles sales, which dipped six per cent in December, bounced back in January, rising 14.8 per cent to 34,037 units (29,634 units). Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland kept the momentum in the medium and heavy commercial vehicles segment (M&HCV), where sales grew 12.5 per cent to 21,009 units. In the light commercial vehicles (LCVs) category, sales were up 18.7 per cent at 13,028 units (10,968 units). However, commercial vehicle sales in the first 10 months saw single-digit growth to 2,71,979 units, an increase of 7.5 per cent over 2,52,919 units sold earlier. In the three-wheeler category, a sharp rise in demand for passenger carriers pushed overall sales up by 26.6 per cent to 34,457 units in January 2006 against 27,215 units earlier. Passenger carrier sales jumped by as much as 43 per cent to 20,573 units (14,344 units). Three-wheeler sales in the first 10 months were up 15.6 per cent at 2,88,527 units (2,49,392 units).
