To begin with, one circuit covering Guwahati-Kaziranga-Shillong-Cherapunji-Guwahati had been identified for promotion.

Kolkata , Jan. 5

THE Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has joined hands with the North Eastern States to promote "circuit tourism" in the North Eastern region.

Towards this end, the chamber, in association with the North Eastern States, is organising a North Eastern Exposition (NEXPO) 2006 here in Kolkata from January 6 to 11.

While promotion of tourism would be a major focus area in NEXPO 2006, the expo would also showcase the culture & arts, handlooms & handicrafts and cuisine of the North-Eastern States.

Addressing a news conference here today, Mr Nazeeb Arif, Secretary-General of ICC, said in the annual convention of Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) held here in 2004, a total of 12 tourist circuits in the North- East had been identified for appropriate marketing and promotion. To begin with, one circuit covering Guwahati-Kaziranga-

Shillong-Cherapunji-

Guwahati had been identified for promotion. Private tour operators have been roped in for packages that would be offered to lure tourists.

The cost of the five-day trip, inclusive of airfare ex-Kolkata, lodging and meals, has been pegged at Rs 11,000-12,000. Offers for other identified circuits would be added soon.

Mr Arif said that, after the last TAAI convention, where one session was dedicated to the North Eastern States, the number of visiting tourists to the region had gone up by 25-30 per cent.

He expressed the hope that after NEXPO 2006, the number of visitors to the North Eastern States would go up further.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Amlan Baruah, Trade Advisor & Director of Movements, Government of Assam, said the North-East was among India's best-kept secrets and there were several exotic destinations with ready infrastructure in the North-East for budget tourists.
