Infrastructure Government - Policy Govt may consider re-evaluating bids for airports modernisation Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan. 4 THE Government has said that the on-going process for the modernisation and restructuring of Delhi and Mumbai airports will not be scrapped though it was willing to consider re-evaluating the bids that have been received. "The Government could look at a re-evaluation or rectification of the bids, but there is no question of scrapping the process," official sources said, adding that the need of the hour is to provide proper focus to the sector for which modernisation of the two metro airports is important. The Government received six bids, including those from Reliance, D.S. Group, GMR and the Zee Group. The modernisation process ran into controversy after fingers were raised about the manner in which it was being carried out. Questions were raised about the reported closeness between the global advisors and some of the bidders. There was also no unanimity in the report of the Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) looking into the modernisation process with some members calling for the process to be started again. The empowered Group of Ministers, which received the IMG report, decided to refer the entire matter to a committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary. Besides, another committee headed by the Managing Director of the Delhi Metro, Mr E. Sreedharan, was also set up to assist the Cabinet Secretary. The official sources, meanwhile, questioned the manner in which some of the IMG officials gave dissenting opinions in their report to the IMG. "It is strange that the people who have appointed the global advisors are now questioning the work that has been done by them," a senior Government official said.
