Outlook 'Rabi prospects look good' Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan. 2 DECLINING to give any production estimates for the rabi crop this year, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Director-General, Dr Mangala Rai, on Monday said the prospects for the crop were extremely good "as of now". This is because of the in-situ moisture availability in soil during October due to rains. Moreover, the temperature was low by 5-6 degree Celsius for about a week during October, which further helped. Moreover, the incidence of fog has been lower this year as compared to last year, he said, adding that fog during day adversely affects photosynthesis. Fortunately, there is no frost till date, which also helps as it affects pulses negatively. No serious incidence of disease or pest-attack has taken place, he added. Mr Rai also said that 10,000 hectare of unconventional land has come under intercropping in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, which is good indicator.
