Chennai , Dec 30 THE Tata Relief Committee (TRC), an organisation promoted by the Tata group for social service at times of natural disasters, is in advanced stage of rehabilitation work in the tsunami-affected areas in Tamil Nadu. At a presentation on the status of its rehabilitation projects for those hit by the tsunami in December 2004, Mr P. Balasubrahmanyam, Honorary Director (Relief Operations), TRC, said that the group has committed over Rs 35 crore for the rehabilitation efforts. It was working in Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts, which were among the worst hit. The work included short-term relief measures and long-term projects including construction of houses and common facilities such as community amenities centres, providing fishing crafts to self-help groups, and assisting in entrepreneurship development programmes. TRC is setting up a community amenities centre at a cost of Rs 45 lakh in Kovalam village, Kanchipuram district, apart from assisting in a sanitation programme, contributing 36 fishing boats costing Rs 1.5 lakh each, and promoting alternative livelihood opportunities like seaweed culture and vocational training to women. In Nagapattinam, over 100 houses are being constructed at a cost of Rs 2.25 crore on the site where the original ones had been destroyed; 800 houses are being built at a cost of Rs 18 crore in other locations along with two amenities centres. In Kanyakumari, TRC is setting up 190 houses on Government-allotted land and repairing eight houses at a total cost of Rs 4.5 crore. It has contributed two `vallams' (traditional fishing boats), 14 catamarans, 16 engines, and 16 sets of nets to the fishermen at a total cost of Rs 17 lakh. In Tirunelveli, 88 houses are coming up at a cost of Rs 2 crore and in Cuddalore, two community amenities centres. Mr R.K. Krishnakumar, Director of Tata Sons Ltd, said that the work on rehabilitation was a model of success as a public-private partnership. The State Government and TRC had worked as a team and supported each other in tackling the practical difficulties in such a major initiative.
